Abstract
This study presents static load and torque distribution measurements in groove cams for sinusoidal and cycloidal cam profiles. In this thesis, two different designs and apparatuses were developed and built for the static force and torque measurements in cam-follower systems. It was shown that for the constant load applied to the groove cams, the peak value of the cycloidal cam's average torque was nearly 50% higher than the peak value of the sinusoidal cam. It was also observed that for the constant torque applied to the groove cams, the peak value of the force experienced by the follower of the cycloidal cam was nearly 40% higher than the peak value of the sinusoidal cam. As a result of this thesis, cycloidal cams can be considered as advantageous compared to sinusoidal cams for having the tendency to produce larger shaft torque for the same external load.
